    why choose us?

Univeristy Pain Consultants was founded upon the commitment to excellence in regards to the treatment of our patients. Our center is unique in that we are proud to boast that all our physicians have completed a rigorous interventional fellowship training program in interventional pain medicine.

That equates to over 13 years of pre-medical and medical training per physician to achieve this status. In addition, each physician is board certified in both pain medicine and anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Fewer than 30% of pain physicians have achieved this prestigious status.

  • Types of Pain We Treat

Pain is usually categorized into ACUTE  and CHRONIC. Acute pain is defined as pain lasting from the time of onset to approximately 6 or 8 weeks.  Fortunately, most acute pain syndromes are benign and self limiting and therefore may not require treatment by a pain management specialist.  However, your primary care physician or other specialists need to be sure your pain is not a tell tale sign of something more ominous such as an infection, fracture, or malignancy.  Acute pain usually responds to conservative treatment such as rest, over the counter pain medications, physical therapy or chiropractic therapy.  Pains lasting longer than this may require a thorough workup which may include lab tests, xrays, MRI scans, or other advanced tests to identify the source of the pain.

Chronic pain however usually lasts longer than 6 weeks.  Studies have shown that pain which does not improve with conservative therapy within the first 6 weeks usually will require more advanced treatment.  This is where your pain management specialist comes in.  Published studies have also shown that the longer patients experience chronic pain, the less chance that they will respond to therapy.  Therefore it is important to be aggressive with the treatment of chronic pain in order to achieve the best results.

University Pain Consultants is a comprehensive pain management clinic.  We treat most chronic pain conditions including but not limited to the following:

Spine mediated pain - back and neck pain usually caused by degenerative changes to the discs, joints, or vertebrae.

Nerve impingement syndromes such as sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, meralgia paresthetica, trigeminal neuralgia

Headache - tension, migraine, cluster, chronic daily

Degenerative joint diseases - osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, shoulders, etc.

Neuropathy due to diabetes, Post-herpetic neuralgia, post-chemotherapy or radiation therapy induced, or neuropathy of unknown causes (idiopathic), post-stroke pain, central pain syndromes

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome  (aka CRPS types I and II) - formerly referred to as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Post-operative pain syndromes such as: failed back and neck surgery syndrome, post hernia repair pain, post-thoracotomy pain syndrome, phantom limb pain

    Fibromyalgia

    Cancer pain

    Post-traumatic chronic pain

    Opiate Dependency:

    • We also offer treatment for opiate dependency on an outpatient basis only using Suboxone.

  • Treatments for pain

Both Dr. Guiang and Dr. Pang are Board Certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.  We believe in the academic approach to treating pain and have been past or present members of the teaching faculty at University based teaching programs.  Therefore we emphasize evidence based medicine.  This means that the treatments we offer are based upon peer reviewed studies and have been shown to offer efficacy regarding the specific syndrome being treated.  There are many health care providers who offer treatments without any scientific basis to substantiate their claim that the treatment can be beneficial.  When in doubt, ask your provider for copies or references to such studies.

    Medication optimization -

Pain medications are categorized by their mechanism of action. Therefore it is of utmost importance to determine the specific type of pain the patient is experiencing in order to prescribe the most appropriate medication or combination of medications.  For instance, some types of neuropathic pain syndromes do not respond at all to the opiate class of medications.

  • Lizeth Rivera is the Front Office Team Lead. She comes to the practice with 10 years of experience as a Medical Assistant crossing into Pain Management from OB/GYN. Liz has a heart that far exceeds her pint sized physical stature and it is due to her compassionate nature that she was chosen to be one of the first people you will meet upon your visit to our office. Part of that gentility comes from having witnessed firsthand, the devastating effects of chronic pain and the debilitating factors patients must overcome by watching her father struggle with long term back pain in his daily life. To her, pain management is a family affair and finds it intrinsically rewarding to offer the kind of service her own loved ones would be extended. Since we are keeping it in the family, feel free to call her Liz.  As she is also quite the movie buff, throw her a line every now and then; she just might be able to catch it!

  • My name is Vanessa Skinner. I am a Medical Assistant here at University Pain Consultants. I attended American College of Healthcare and did my externship here for about 2 months. I then graduated in July of 2012. A few short months later I got hired. Everyone that works here is very courteous and I love working with them. I am very glad to have this opportunity to have a position in such a great office with very incredible people.

  • Meningitis alert
