Pain is usually categorized into ACUTE or CHRONIC. Acute pain is defined as pain lasting from the time of onset to approximately 6 or 8 weeks. Fortunately, most acute pain syndromes are benign and self limiting and therefore may not require treatment by a pain management specialist. However, your primary care physician or other specialists need to be sure your pain is not a tell tale sign of something more ominous such as an infection, fracture, or malignancy. Acute pain usually responds to conservative treatment such as rest, over the counter pain medications, physical therapy or chiropractic therapy. Pains lasting longer than this may require a thorough workup which may include lab tests, xrays, MRI scans, or other advanced tests to identify the source of the pain.
Chronic pain however usually lasts longer than 6 weeks. Studies have shown that pain which does not improve with conservative therapy within the first 6 weeks usually will require more advanced treatment. This is where your pain management specialist comes in. Published studies have also shown that the longer patients experience chronic pain, the less chance that they will respond to therapy. Therefore it is important to be aggressive with the treatment of chronic pain in order to achieve the best results.
